    Learned how open files into gedit from the command line. Found out GIMP and Inkscape need some setup in their preferences for use with a Wacom tablet in Linux. Learned more about tablet/pen calibration in Linux Mint. Read about making files executable and editable, key binding, simple backup from the shell using dd, Xchat translator plug-in.

    Learned some of the basics of Linux on Bob’s Low Fat Linux website. Continued to research tablet support for ThinkPad tablets and Linux. Started to look into how to modify scripts in
    Linux to map keys and add tablet support, etc.

    Learned that the latest Linux Mint works with the Wacom tablet built-in to the ThinkPad X61 tablet automatically. No special setup or modifications needed. Researched x86 Android compatibility with ThinkPad tablets.

    Started research for Independent Study. Looked into running Ubuntu Linux on ThinkPad X41 and X61 Tablet PCs with modifications for getting the built-in Wacom Serial Tablet to work in both models.

    Downloaded Word document detailing how to document Windows XP / Windows 7 utilities.
    Then I spent the rest of the time documenting Windows XP utilities in a new Word document on my network drive.

    Wrote summaries for each of the Windows XP utilities that I documented yesterday. Learned that Vista and Windows 7 also have a safe mode. Holding down F8 while booting Windows will bring up a text mode menu where you can select Safe Mode and
    other different types of booting for troubleshooting and repair. System Restore is run from Safe Mode.

    For Windows XP I documented the steps to open Disk Management, Computer Management, Microsoft Management Console, System Restore, Task Manager, System Configuration Utility (msconfig), Services Console, System Information (msinfo32), and Event Viewer.

    Finished Sysprep lab on Thursday. Did SkillSoft training on Linux shell and commands.

    Finished with learning Sysprep and Acronis True Image ’09. I had to do a lot of reading between the lines and figuring
    out what pieces were missing because the documentation I found for Sysprep online was not very good.
    Learned where to save Acronis images on network.

    Used Compaq Evo machine to learn Sysprep. After partitioning with GPARTED I installed Windows XP but I got a ”NTLDR
    is Missing” error. I re-installed XP this time formatting the partition in the XP installer instead of choosing ”Leave partition
    untouched.” I have copied the Sysprep files to the hard drive and will continue tomorrow.

    Downloaded VirtualBox and Android virtual appliance. Configured Android e-mail client

    Using GOAT Compaq computer set up Shares folder at root level of hard drive with admin, student , and dropbox within it.

    Then set up accounts and permissions for those accounts. (teacher and user) Seemed to start working right when I set up passwords for the teacher and user accounts. Still need to check with Joe to make sure it is set up correctly.

    Did research on file permissions, workgroups, and domains. Looked at file permissions info for OSes other than Windows also. Set up file sharing / workgroup between two Windows 7 machines.

    Changed lab PCs and routers to Static IPs.
    Drew network map of lab computers and filled in IP addresses.
    Looked for cabling problems with network after break, extra cable allowed PC to see 2 routers at once. Changed network configuration to original daisy-chained configuration. All have WWW access.

    Corrected network map IP addresses for PCs with SmartDraw. Installed SmartDraw on VOST1 (Windows Vista) to do this. Completed reading for today. Learned more about what DNS propagation is between DNS servers. Need MAC addresses from PC1, PC2, and router Ethernet ports on lab equipment for spreadsheet.

    Started ticket for Networking Review and Troubleshooting. Finished drawing of network map. Took notes on labs from last week. Started Excel spreadsheet for network map. (mapTemplate.ods) Looked up some networking terms in A+ book. Added a couple more remote access applications to list. Installed SmartDraw in Windows Vista and learned to use it.
